A Note from Miss Lila
The winter is here! There was a resounding “cheer” from our students last week as they observed the first flakes of snow starting to fall on the playground. Unfortunately (at least from the children’s perspective) the snow didn’t stick. However, it does signify the change of season and all that is needed for being prepared.
In the business of holidays and snow, here is all you need to know to get you through December:
- Winter Clothing. Our school will go outside everyday for recess so it is imperative that you provide appropriate clothing for outdoor play. Winter coats, hats gloves, snow pants and boots are all required for school play. Please label all clothing with your child’s name as you would be surprised how many “duplicates” of clothing we see. Also, please swtich out your child’s “extra clothing” for more weather appropriate ware; time to take the shorts and short sleeve T shirts home.
- School Holiday celebrations: With the exception of rooms 1 and 7; all classrooms will be hosting a parent invite event this month. Please see your child’s classroom newsletter for details. (December 20th celebrations in rooms 2,3 &6; December 21st celebrations in rooms 4 & 5)
- Winter Camp registration open through December 12th. We must have at least 12 signed up for winter camp to happen so please RSVP now! More information about Winter camp will be sent home in your child’s Friday folder.
- Billing for December is complete. Credit card payments will process on the 6th. All open invoices are due by the 5th of each month; late fees assess after the 5th. January billing will go out at the end of December. Please don’t hesitate to ask Kellie any questions you may have about billing.
SCHOOL CLOSURES
- School will be closed for winter break from December 22nd-January 2nd. Winter camp hours are available from 8am-5pm on December 27-29th. Sign up for this is required by December 12th.
- School closures due to weather conditions such as snow/ice can happen. Determinations will be made by 6am if the school weather conditions are deemed unsafe. In the event our school does close we will reach out via email to our enrolled families, update our website with information and leave a voice mail at the school as well as report to channel 7 local news.
In Our Community:
It is bitter sweet that we are saying goodbye to two teachers this month . Miss Addie, who has decided to do some extensive traveling and Miss Jenna (our Monday Spanish teacher) who is moving out of state. However, we are welcoming in some great new faces to our community, Mr. Rick who will be taking over Jenna’s Spanish classes on Monday and Miss Debbie who will be assisting in room 6. Make sure to say hello to our wonderful new members!
GLOBAL OUTREACH PROJECT:
What began as a student’s question “What happens to our old puzzles when pieces go missing?” has developed into a learning project of how to recycle, reduce and reuse in our classrooms. Our classrooms and teachers have adopted two international Montessori programs to “adopt” this year.
Lead by our Kindergarten students and teachers, we are donating our gently used classroom materials to two schools; one in Western Samoa and another in South Africa. Currently, the kindergarten students are collecting “pennies for postage” to send the boxes of supplies to the schools. The boxes are scheduled to go out by February. Thank you to our kindergarten students this year for helping us organize this project and asking some great questions!
BOOK FAIR:
In lieu of our Scholastic book orders during the month of December, Parkcenter Montessori will be hosting a Book Fair from December 6th-9th. Rediscovered Books is a local business that will be bringing in a select group of books for all aged children. They have generously offered to donate 30% of all sales made back to the Parkcenter Montessori library. All of the kickbacks raised from this event will return in book purchases for our school’s library. Please see Jamie if you are interested in volunteering with helping collecting monies from families during the course of the book fair. There will be a time slot sign-up sheet in the office.
FUNDRAISER EXTENSION:
- If you missed out on Yankee Candle last month, we will be opening up an “online only” sale from November 28 through December 12th. Funds raised from this event will go towards our school’s Capital Expense projects. The online catalog can be accessed at www.yankeecandlefundraising.com using the school code 990085718 Please see Jamie at the office for more any questions or more information.
- We are looking for parents who are interested in being part of our yearbook committee. We are looking for some parents to sign up to take pictures of school events throughout the school year. More information about school yearbook purchases will be available at the end of spring. Please contact Jamie via email Jamie.jennings@nlcinc.com or in person at the office if you are interested!!
